SR's Birth Story

I checked into the hospital at 5:30pm on 7/13 for a scheduled inducement on the morning of 7/14. Got checked in, ready to go, got checked - I was still 1cm, 50% effaced - and they started the Cervidil to get my cervix ready for the next day. The plan was to start Pitocin at 7am on 7/14.

It was a very restless night's sleep for both me and my mom who was with me as my support and birthing coach. The bed(s) were not so comfortable, irregular contractions, not to mention gettting up to go to the bathroom (after unhooking wires) every hour.  I was very excited to see the 6 o'clock hour roll around as I wanted to see my progress.

So at 6:20am on 7/14 the Cervidil came out, I was checked and the nurse who checked me said she wouldn't even call me a fingertip. This was discouraging to say the least, but I knew the Pitocin was coming so it wasn't horrible news - I just figured I was in for a long day. That I was right about.

Then everything changed in literally minutes. My OB came in before she headed for her office visits to check me and break my water just before 7am. Well she checked me and I was very uncomfortable. She very business like stated to the nurse to chart that I was 2cm and 70% effaced, however, I had never heard her speak in this tone before. Then she said to the nurse to get the ultrasound machine now. This tone I wasn't used to either. I started to panic and since I was hooked up to the fetal monitor and heard the heart rate was ok - I knew what was coming when she put her hand on my belly.

The ultrasound machine took what seemed like forever to warm up and even though my mom was asking questions I could tell my OB didn't want to answer until she was sure - then it was confirmed - after the baby had successfully turned head down at 34 weeks, sometime in the past 9 days she had turned breech again. I knew what this meant and immediatly started to panic, my mom was asking how they did deliveries for breech babies (as she was born breech naturally herself) and almost in unison the OB and I told her they didn't deliver vaginally - I needed a C-Section. The questions as to when this would happen started and when everyone but my mom left the room for answers around 7:15 I broke down - big time.

I had been at 1cm for over 4 weeks with protracted labor, had had a horrible night, and had a rare feeling after the induction was scheduled that it would lead to a c-section. I started picturing the nursery and immediatly started worrying about the baby. I could hear her heartbeat just fine, it was ok, but I was crying really hard praying for not the first time that if God did what he had to do save the baby and don't worry about me. My mom was comforting me, calling my dad to get him up here to the hospital ASAP, and called the pastor at the church she worked at to come up. Luckily I had packed the Bible my brother gave me at confirmation that had my great-grandmother's prayerbook in it - and we said my "Gram"'s favorite prayer.

The next hour or so flew by, the anestheiologist was in by 7:30 to explain and I was wheeled into the surgery room when it's digital clock hit 8:12. Spinal was in shortly after I looked at the clock at 8:15. Oxygen in the nose, anastelologist by my head, blue screen up, I heard my OB come in the door, testing for numbness, and then my mom came in. Next thing I knew I heard a cry (best sound I have EVER heard and thank God) and SR was here at 8:41am on 7/14/11. My dad arrived shortly after and they let him suit up and come in as well....which helped me because he is also medical personal (like me) so I sent him to find out the APGAR, breathing, etc. Mom came back by to say she was 7lbs 11oz, 20.5in long, with a full head of strawberry blonde hair :) I got to snuggle to my room on the way out with her too!

I was raised Catholic but haven't practiced since in about 10 years because of my issue with the "trinity" thing. Let's just say that is old news now and my wonderful little girl has brought me so many gifts into my life already. Love our support system and we will be just fine as a family of two!
